An Open Space

Histoire & Géographie teacher Mouna Harifi sparked the idea for International High School’s first student-produced radio station, having been inspired by Radio Pulsar, her high school radio station from when she was a student in France. Now, one semester later and with the support of several high school faculty advisors and the administration, the radio station has grown to a team of almost 20 students working collaboratively to conduct student and faculty interviews, edit podcasts, and manage technical equipment.

“It’s a way for the students to get their voices heard. We are not a political school, but we are a free [an open] space. Here they are free to ask questions, voice their opinions, and get engaged around issues that they care about,” said Mme. Harifi. Corin, radio station team member and 10th grader, added “What’s really exciting is that we’re able to choose the material we want to share and ask for people’s opinions about matters that are pertinent to us as students.”

The station is managed by two 10th-grade students, Charlotte and Olivia. Collectively, they are looking forward to recording more interviews and making more students aware of the project. “This is ultimately for the students and by the students. It’s important to us to discuss topics that people need to know or might be interested in knowing about, like the current state of our country or environmental issues—something that is personally really important to me,” expressed Olivia.“We also want to find a way to get suggestions from the greater student body to understand what they want to hear about. We are still in the beginning stages but receive a lot of support from the administration and teachers and are excited to move forward.”

Aside from conversation around relevant local and global issues, listeners can expect to hear about school activities like theatre, music, and sports events.
