International High School prides itself on producing exciting, challenging, high-quality theater productions. It also prides itself on the student leadership, collaborative spirit, and strong community found in Back-à-Dos, after-school performing arts program. Back-à-Dos produces at least three major shows each year: a full-length play, a musical, and student-directed one acts. In addition to performing, students involved in Back-à-Dos support the program through helping with sets, props, costumes, lights, sound, publicity and stage management.
Students in both the International Baccalaureate and French Baccalaureate tracks can also study theater in the classroom for all four years at International High School. In classes, students develop skills in
performance technique (movement, voice, improvisation, scene study) and explore stagecraft, design, writing, and directing. They study major theater practitioners (such as Stanislavsky, Brecht, LeCoq, Artaud, Boal) and delve into international theater traditions. Students work with visiting artists, perform for the school community, and take field trips to see local productions. Upper level classes culminate in compelling individual projects, in which students take the lead in directing, designing and producing.
