Responsive Classrooms Shape Broader School Community
Posted 11/12/2018 02:45PM

Following the successful implementation of the Responsive Classroom approach in the Lower School last Fall, middle school core teachers and advisors are being trained to carry out the pedagogy in their classrooms this school year. The evidence-based approach focuses on the strong relationship between academic success and social-emotional learning (SEL).

By working to implement Responsive Classroom in the Middle School, we allow for students to experience common languages and practices in their transition from the Lower School. Recognizing similar activities and expectations, such as responsive Advisory meetings to start the week that mirror the morning meetings students had each day in the Lower School, eases any stress or worry related to the move up to the 4th floor.

The success of the approach is evident at French American: The approach increases student engagement, improves academic achievement, decreases discipline problems, and leads to more high-quality teaching.

Yet, Responsive Classroom techniques do not end at the classroom door. By empowering educators to create safe, joyful, and engaging learning communities where all students have a sense of belonging and feel significant, the approach supports the foundation of a positive school culture across the all of French American + International.

"Research shows that younger children have a superior ability to learn a second language and that bilingual students tend to outperform their monolingual peers."
