Ron Kahn


Ronald Kahn is a Managing Director and Global Head of Scientific Equity Research at BlackRock. Prior to BlackRock’s acquision of Barclays Global Investors, he was Global Head of Equity Research at BGI. He is responsible for upholding and enhancing BlackRock's scientific equity research standards and products. He also chairs BlackRock’s Global and US Proxy Committees.

He is a well-known expert on portfolio management, risk modeling, and quantitative investing. With Richard Grinold, he authored Active Portfolio Management: Quantitative Theory and Applications. Ron and Richard are the 2013 winners of the James R. Vertin award, presented periodically by the CFA Institute to recognize individuals who have produced a body of research notable for its relevance and enduring value to investment professionals. Ron is a 2007 winner of the Bernstein Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy award for best article in the Journal of Portfolio Management. He serves on the editorial advisory boards of the Financial Analysts Journal, the Journal of Portfolio Management and the Journal of Investment Consulting. The 2007 book How I Became a Quant includes his essay describing his transition from physics to finance.

He teaches the equities half of the course, "International Equity and Currency Markets" in UC Berkeley's Master of Financial Engineering Program.

He earned an AB degree in physics, summa cum laude, from Princeton and a PhD in physics from Harvard. He was a post-doctoral fellow in physics at University of California, Berkeley.

On the French American Board, he chairs the Head Search Committee, the Strategic Planning Committee, and the Endowment Board. Other non-profit activities include serving on the Boards of Trustees of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute and Jewish Family & Children's Services. He is also on the Advisory Board of the Center for Talented Youth at Johns Hopkins.

Ron and his wife Julia live in San Francisco and Sonoma. His two sons were lifers at the school, one graduating with the French Bac degree and the other with the IB degree. His stepdaughter attended French American from pre-K through 8th grade.

Directory Our Locations

An independent Pre-K through 12th grade co-educational day school in the heart of San Francisco. The school delivers a rigorous bilingual (French/English) immersion program through middle school, culminating in either French Baccalaureate or International Baccalaureate program in its International High School.
