SPEAK is a coalition of San Francisco K-8 schools that have joined together to enhance parent education. The goal: Enrich the education and learning experience of our families, our children and our communities.
On Wednesday, February 6th from 7-8:15pm in the French American + International Gym at 151 Oak Street, SPEAK will host a conversation with author and advocate Lori Duron.
Lori Duron will give a frank, heartfelt and humorous account of her family’s adventures of (initial) distress and (eventual) happiness raising a gender creative son. Duron will explain the differences between sex, gender, sexuality and other related concepts in an easy-to-understand way. She’ll share how her family navigated the often challenging but never dull privilege of raising a gender creative, LGBTQ son and offer tips for supporting kids like hers to beat the statistics and launch them healthily into adulthood.
Lori Duron is the author of the award-winning book Raising My Rainbow: Adventures in Raising a Fabulous, Gender Creative Son, the first parenting memoir to chronicle the journey of raising a gender nonconforming child, and is based on her popular blog RaisingMyRainbow.com which has 4 million readers in 199 countries. Raising My Rainbow was awarded the American Library Association‘s 2014 Stonewall Award in the non-fiction category; was one of Publisher’s Weekly’s Best Books of 2013; and a PEOPLE Magazine Good Read. Duron’s blog has been named one of BlogHer’s Voices of the Year four times; one of Ignite Social Media’s “100 Women Bloggers You Should be Reading;” one of Circle of Moms “Top 25 SoCal Moms;” and one of Parents Magazine’s blogs that are “Most Likely To Change The World.” Duron was awarded PFLAG’s 2015 Flag Bearer Award.
