Raising the Roof
Posted 10/04/2016 04:12PM

Prior to this summer, the 6th-floor roof was a place that students and faculty passed through, occasionally sitting down to have lunch. Hard and gray, it's safe to say the roof was uninviting. Last year, however, several students weighed in with regard to improving the space: Robin, Malia, Alaezia, and Alex from the Class of 2016, along with Natalie '19, and student body president Gwen '17. Suggestions included laying down turf to warm up the floor (aesthetically and literally), and placing wood benches strategically to allow for both eating and athletic conditioning. Today, that vision is a reality. During breaks students gather to lunch, study, or simply lounge. Mathew '18 notes, the rooftop is "much more enjoyable now because it's more comfortable. I really love the grass because it is a lot cleaner, looks more modern, and allows us to lay down." Outside of breaks, the Athletics Department periodically uses the space for conditioning. Mr. Simoes Gil adds, "When it's sunny, the rooftop is comfortable and accommodates a large group of students better than the Performance Lab. Students love to work out in a more open, bright space with fresh air."

Thanks to students and staff alike for improving our spaces.
