San Francisco Bay is an undisputed mecca for sailboat racing, and many world championships and Olympic medals have been won by athletes who’ve learned to race on The Bay. International’s sailing team practices twice a week at St. Francis Yacht club as part of a High School racing program that includes several other high schools in San Francisco. Sailors experience physical challenge, personal improvement and the benefits of being part of a team. Some compete at a national level and many are recruited to race on college sailing teams. All boat equipment and facilities are supplied by the club, along with professional youth coaching staff. All racing is conducted under the PCISA (Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Association) in the NorCal League. The PCISA includes over 50 active teams, with teams being comprised of 2-10 sailors each. The Varsity team typically competes in six Fall regattas and four-five Winter/Spring regattas. Try-outs occur at the beginning of the school year to qualify for Varsity or Junior Varsity. Sailors trying out need to have some basic recreational or racing experience.
