HEAD COACH: DANNIKA NAVALES-LUGTU
As a Bay Area native, Dannika Navales-Lugtu participated in multiple sports growing up: basketball, soccer, and swimming. However, basketball always came first in Dannika’s heart. After many years of competitive, AAU experience, Navales-Lugtu took her talents to Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory High School, earning a spot on the perennially successful Varsity team with Coach Brian Harrigan in 2007. Here, the Fighting Irish went undefeated and claimed their third consecutive State Championship Title. They were ranked #1 High School Basketball team in the nation. Coach Dannika describes the 2007 season as an incredibly rewarding time in her life, a once-in-a-lifetime experience that taught her the values she values while coaching: discipline, hard work, and HEART.
After four years on the Varsity Team at Sacred Heart, Dannika was awarded a scholarship to attend and play basketball at Whittier College in Southern California. There, the young point guard was a starter as a freshman. Her ball-handling skills, accurate three-point shooting, and decision-making skills helped her unanimously earn the Freshman Female of the Year Award. As a student-athlete, Dannika studied Kinesiology, with an emphasis in Physical Therapy. The knowledge she learned in the classroom has translated onto the court, giving her a deeper understanding of complex movements of the human body.
Since moving back to the Bay after her four years at Whittier, Coach Dannika has gained coaching experience with Bay City Basketball. Teaching and guiding young student-athletes drives Dannika to coach at the next level. She knows what it takes to be successful on the court as well as being a team leader, role model, and student-athlete.
